Many people depend on their morning cup of coffee to give them a boost of energy needed to wake up and get going. Unfortunately, coffee stains teeth. The enamel of the tooth isn’t smooth and flat but is full of tiny ridges and pits. These pits can hold microscopic amounts of food and drinks. When coffee is regularly drunk, it discolors teeth by lodging itself into these pits. Regular teeth whitening allows you to enjoy a cup of Joe while maintaining a white smile.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

After an examination and cleaning by our SouthPark cosmetic dentist to remove any plaque and debris, a cheek retractor is placed in the mouth to expose all of the teeth and make them easier to whiten. Next, a hardening resin is applied to the gums to protect them during the procedure. A whitening gel is then brushed onto the exposed teeth and allowed to sit. The amount of time it sits depends on the strength of the gel. Your teeth may be exposed to heat, light or a combination of the two in order to attain the brightest white possible. Finally, the gel is removed. The process may be repeated an additional time during the session to increase the speed of whitening.

What is the Difference between In-Office and At-Home Teeth Whitening?

In-office home whitening and at-home kits purchased at the store both contain hydrogen peroxide that whitens teeth. In-office whitening contains larger amounts, normally between 15 and 43 percent, that are applied for a shorter period of time to whiten teeth faster. Additionally, patients experience less tooth and gum sensitivity when seen at the office due to thicker gel solutions and the addition potassium nitrate and fluoride that decrease sensitivity.

How Long Does Each Teeth Whitening Session Take?

It typically takes multiple 30 to 60 minutes per session to dramatically whiten teeth three to eight shades whiter. Once your teeth have been whitened, the white color can be maintained through good hygiene and regular whitening sessions. Take-home whitening trays are also available for patients who would like to whiten their teeth in-between sessions.

Will I Experience Any Pain?

The actual whitening procedure is painless. Some people may experience some temporary tooth sensitivity. This typically goes away within seven days of the procedure.
