Types of Dental Fillings
- Gold fillings are custom-made in a dental laboratory and then cemented into place. While gold fillings are often the most expensive choice, many consider them to be the best filling material, as they are well-tolerated by gum tissues and may last more than 15 years.
- Amalgam (silver) fillings are a less expensive option that offer many of the same benefits. However, they are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations and are not recommended for visible areas, such as front teeth.
- Composite resin fillings can be matched to the exact color of your natural teeth, creating a less noticeable appearance. However, composite fillings usually only last between 3 and 10 years, and may not be ideal for large fillings as they may chip or wear over time. They can also become stained from coffee, tea, or tobacco.
- Porcelain fillings, also called inlays or onlays, and tooth-colored fillings that resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth, making the filling nearly undetectable. It may be surprising to learn that porcelain fillings are usually about the same cost as gold fillings.
To determine which filling option is best for you, your dentist will discuss various options with you such as cost, longevity, placement, and preference.
Should I Replace My Metal Fillings?
If you received metal fillings many years ago, they may be starting to break down. If the fillings are unattractive or uncomfortable, one of our dentists can replace them with a more natural and comfortable composite restoration.
