If you are unhappy with your smile, dental implants could be the right solution for replacing missing teeth. Implants are metal frames or posts that are positioned surgically under your gums into the jawbone. Once implants are in place, your cosmetic dentist can then mouth replacement teeth onto the frames. Since the implants will actually fuse into your jawbone, they offer the stable support necessary for artificial teeth. Implants should not be confused with removable dentures. One of the advantages of implants is that they will not shift or slip around in your mouth, which can be beneficial when speaking or eating. Thanks to the secure fit offered by implants, many people find that implants feel far more natural than dentures.

Implants are also a great alternative to dentures and traditional bridges for individual who have found that dentures and bridges cause sore spots or even a gagging sensation. Another advantage of implants is that there is no need to prepare or grind down adjacent teeth in order to hold the replacement tooth, as is the case with a bridge.

In order to be a good candidate for implants, you must have a sufficient amount of bone and healthy gums to support the implant. Candidates for dental implants must also be committed to keeping the implants healthy. Regular dental visits and meticulous oral hygiene are vital. Implants are typically not advised for individuals who are smokers, who have uncontrolled diabetes, people with autoimmune disease, or persons who have had radiation therapy to the neck and head.

Persons considering dental implants should also realize receiving implants does require minor oral surgery. In most instances, the procedure is a two-step process, although there are now newer implants available that only require a one-step procedure. As is the case with any type of oral surgery, there is a risk for complications, including bleeding, injury to nerves, and infection. Failure of an implant is extremely rare.

Following the procedure, your cosmetic dentist will typically prescribe pain medication and antibiotics in addition to providing follow-up instructions. You should only eat soft foods and should not suck on straws. The implant area will need to be kept clean. Your dentist will request that you return within 7 to 10 days to remove the stitches.

If you are interested in finding out if implants are a good solution for your dental needs, contact the dentist office to request an appointment and speak to a cosmetic dentist.
