Extracting a Tooth: Our Process
In most cases, tooth extraction is a rather simple procedure that can be completed with the use of a local anesthetic. Patients may experience some mild discomfort, but should not experience any pain. If you do begin to feel pain at any point during the treatment, you can signal your dentist to stop by raising your hand, and he or she will apply more anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable.
After the tooth has been extracted, you may experience some discomfort and swelling. An ice pack or an unopened bag of frozen vegetables can help keep swelling to a minimum. Pain medications prescribed by your dentist, or over-the-counter NSAIDS such as ibuprofen, can help keep pain and swelling to a minimum.
What are Signs of Complications?
Complications from tooth extractions are usually very rare, but they are possible. If your swelling does not subside after 48 hours, or if you experience bleeding or sudden, acute pain, contact our office as soon as possible for advice on how to proceed.
Why Should Missing Teeth Be Replaced?
Although it is cheaper and easier to simply leave the hole as it is, this is not recommended. Having missing teeth not only prevents you from eating certain foods and looking your best, it also can shift your bite, causing further issues such as TMJ (chronic jaw pain.) A missing tooth can even result in bone loss of the lower jaw. Therefore, we will usually recommend you receive a dental implant, bridge, or denture to replace the missing teeth.
